Our story

At Perla Verde, we offer affordable and eco-friendly pearl jewelry fit for the beach and the board room, so you can elevate your style sustainably.

Safeguarding our oceans: our commitment to sustainable pearl jewelry

At Perla Verde, we're deeply aware of the environmental impacts of wild pearl harvesting on marine ecosystems. Natural pearl harvesting often disrupts delicate marine habitats and endangers the survival of mollusk populations and other sea life. This practice can lead to biodiversity loss and ecological imbalance in our oceans.

Understanding these consequences, we've consciously chosen to embrace shell pearls and cultured pearls in our jewelry collections. Shell pearls, made from the inner lining of mollusk shells, offer a sustainable alternative, avoiding the ecological strain of wild pearl harvesting. These pearls not only provide the same lustrous beauty as natural pearls but also ensure no harm to living mollusks or their habitats.

Similarly, our cultured pearls are grown in carefully managed environments, aligning with our commitment to sustainability and ethical jewelry production. This approach not only safeguards marine life but also supports local communities involved in pearl farming. By cultivating pearls, we help maintain the balance of marine ecosystems while offering high-quality, beautiful pearl jewelry.

Choosing shell and cultured pearls reflects our dedication to environmental responsibility and ethical practices in the world of luxury jewelry. It's not just about adorning you with elegance; it's about preserving the beauty of our oceans for future generations. With every piece from our collection, you're not just making a style statement – you're joining us in a movement towards a more sustainable and conscientious world.

Shell pearls

Shell pearls are made from the same material as natural pearls – nacre. This material is ground into a powder, shaped into beads, and then coated to create the pearl's luster. One of the advantages of shell pearls is their uniformity in size, shape, and color, which can be more consistent than natural pearls. They are also quite durable, resistant to chipping, wear, and discoloration. They can be produced in a variety of colors and sizes, and often have a high luster and smooth surface, similar to high-quality natural pearls.Since they don’t require pearl farming, shell pearls can be considered a more environmentally friendly and ethical option compared to some methods of pearl cultivation.

Cultured pearls

Cultured freshwater pearls are pearls that are produced in freshwater mussels under controlled conditions, as opposed to being formed naturally in the wild. While they are still real pearls made of nacre, the process of their formation is initiated and managed by humans. The production of cultured freshwater pearls involves delicately inserting a tissue graft from a donor mussel, along with a small piece of mantle tissue, into a host mussel. This insertion acts as the irritant that stimulates the pearl production process. Cultured freshwater pearls are grown in freshwater bodies like lakes, ponds, and rivers, predominantly in China, which is the largest producer of these pearls.

One of the unique aspects of cultured freshwater pearls is that many are almost entirely composed of nacre, the substance that gives pearls their luster and iridescence. This can result in a more durable pearl with a deep, rich luster. They are available in various shapes and sizes, ranging from perfectly round to oval, baroque (irregular), and unique shapes. Their size can vary from small to quite large. Cultured pearl farming is often considered a more sustainable and environmentally friendly option compared to wild pearl harvesting, as it does not deplete natural pearl beds.
